Advice from college and career coach Carol Carter:Returning to school after years off can be daunting. You might be facing an age gap where other students will be much younger than you. You might have a full-time job or family to consider, or maybe you're worried that you don't remember how to study and learn in a classroom. These are all real and common concerns. However, to keep these from being obstacles, find a friend or family member who can give you emotional support. Meet other re-entry students to form a community of similar learners. Let your professors know that you've been away from the classroom and ask for any suggestions to get you started on the right foot. Plan ahead for each class and research resources here at LifeBound and at the institution you will be attending for additional support. The recession has many people returning to school to make them more marketable in an unstable economy and to increase their wages. According to the U.S. Census Bureau:

People who return to school after a lengthy break are often referred to as returning, re-entry or non-traditional students. The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) determined approximately 73 percent of undergraduate students in 2000 qualified as a non-traditional student, making this demographic a typical student. According to www.back2college.com, a re-entry student is:
- often female
- in the 25-65 age range
- either returning to college or going to college for the first time
- going back to school after spending time in the workforce, raising a family, serving in the military, or pursuing their dream career.
