Advice from college and career coach Carol Carter:

School is an opportunity to get a great education, but it is also a chance to learn about yourself, your friends, and how the world works. Take the time to develop your emotional intelligence. This involves the ability to understand your emotions and identify your strengths and weaknesses, along with the skills to work well with others, solve problems, make decisions, and participate on teams. Your EQ your emotional intelligence is what you use when you stand up for a student who is being bullied. It's what you use when you decide not to cheat. It's what you access when you confront a friend who has just experienced disappointment or loss. It's what you use to help you be kind to yourself and to others.

Did You Know?

  • Your emotional intelligence is more important than your IQ when interacting with people. Eighty percent of effective leaders have a high EI. (Source: Action Learning)
  • When you are involved in extracurricular activities, like soccer, dance, chess, or organizing the school dance, you are simultaneously learning skills like organization and time management.
  • When you feel like you are a part of a learning community, you are more likely to do better both socially (with your friends) and academically (your studies).

Holiday Traditions and Rituals that Anchor and Energize

Look back at your childhood. What gave you the most pleasure during the holidays? Was it the big fancy presents, the over the top parties, or was it a more simple ritual, time spent together as a family, a moment of calmness, gratitude and connection? A parent I spoke with recently said, “It’s... Read More
