The Perks of Reading Over Your Winter Break

In high school, our teachers assigned us books to read for class.  Unless you were lucky, most of the books were probably not ones you were interested in and your teachers forced you to memorize silly trivia.  This may have made reading seem like a tedious task, but as a college student, you can make reading fun again.

Searching for Identity in College

College is an important time in finding out who you are.  As a child and teen, it was too easy to define yourself by who your friends were, or who your parents wanted you to be, or by what was cool.  Even adults identify themselves too often by their career, race, or wealth.

Relaxation vs. Laziness: Making the Most of Your Holiday Break

Finally!  Exams are over and for the next few weeks, thoughts of studying and going to class are long gone from the minds of college students.  After putting in another semester worth of hard work, winter vacation is just what the doctor ordered.  This time should be taken to relax your brain and body, but there is a fine line between relaxation and laziness.

Easy Steps Students Can Make to Eat Healthier this Holiday Season

On my way to work this week, I made a stop for coffee.  Upon entering the shop and ordering my coffee, I set down the lunch I had packed for myself and sat at a table.  Not five minutes later, another customer who I have gotten to know pretty well said, “Nicoll, is that your lunch?”  I responded by telling her that it was and with a disgusted look on her face, she said she couldn’t believe I would have packed a diet soda.  Taken by surprise, I asked her why and she told me, “because it’s so unhealthy!”

Is college worth it?

In an article written by Dale Stephens, he argues that “we must encourage young people to consider paths outside college.”  While I agree with some of the flaws he points out in higher education, I think that given the opportunity, going the college route is usually a great decision.  Too many adults are regretting years later their decision not to get their degree.  Going to school after having spent years out of it and with a career and a family is much more difficult.

Preserving Relationships with Younger Siblings While at College

My younger brother is five years younger than me.  My freshman year of college was his freshman year of high school and it killed me that I wasn’t there to keep an eye on him.  I told myself I would keep in constant contact with him, but I discovered that maintaining relationships when you are living somewhere else is hard work.

Volunteering Can Mean More Opportunity for All Parties

Volunteering is not only good for the community, but good for the volunteer.  In an article published by U.S. News, it was found that volunteering can lead to longer lives for senior citizens.  This can also apply to college students.  It was found that volunteering forms relationships with people who have common interests.  Having a network of people can lead to a sense of belonging and of purpose.  These two things are key in fighting depression, which is not uncommon among young adults.

Connecting with Foreign Students in the United States

When I was 14, my mother packed my bags and sent me to Panama, her country.  I had been there before, but this trip was not the fun vacation I was used to.  This trip was to spend my summer going to school, and I was terrified.

Three Things Every Student Should Know Before Studying Abroad

College is the perfect time to take advantage of study abroad programs.  You can receive school credit, and get financial aid to help you pay for your program.  Being able to spend months in another country learning the culture is an opportunity that may not present itself again later in life.
